Soundportraits: after an initial survey of the key sound characteristics of a given location (here Gesundbrunnencenter in Wedding), a raw audio edit piece is composed (no post editing allowed) - connected points are mapped, and the conceptual approach is outlined in text and title form

A cascade of chocolate and the space in between two escalators make a discrete wave sound which you can only hear when you position yourself in the exact spot. This two hidden sounds are in tune and synchrony from afar. With this composition they find each other. And me, I run in between them to achieve that.

I was intrigued by the sound the escalators in the shopping mall made. I’ver never taken notice of it before as they it's only audible if you go really close. The only editing I did was with the position of the recorder. I held it to different parts of the escalator which made different sounds, I turned it in different directions and traveled up and down the stairs with it.
Listening to the recording made me think of a voyage through some tunnel somewhere in a dystopian future. The sounds are at the same time industrially mechanical as well as somehow digitally futuristic. You can hear rattling and whoooooshing and it made me think a lot of the trip one of the main characters in “The Machine Stops” by E.M. Forster is going on. Although the short story is from 1909 it depicts the future in an almost irritatingly precise manner.
The voices that you hear in the background reminded me of the people our rattling, whooshing and extremely fast train is passing by on our trip across the globe. They might also be the voices of the souls we lost on the voyage.

Ich nahm mit dem Handy verschiedenes Geräusch jeder ca.10 Sekunde im Gesundbrunnen Center und da herum auf. In dieser Aufnahme gibt es eine Bewegung, die ich ein und aus gehe. Die fängt mit dem Geräusch der Rolltreppe beim Eintritt an. Und ich bin rumgelaufen im Center. Danach ging ich hinaus.(50sec)
Am Ende ging ich durch die Drehtür wieder ins Gesundbrunnen Center ein. (2min)
Ich machte einige Runde an der Drehtür. sie hat regelmäßigen Rhythmus. Bei der Drehtür kann Innen und Außen regelmäßig wahrnehmen.

Ich stelle ein Video dar, um die interessante Klangwelle zu sehen.

‘acoustic belt’ can be performed around the circumference of any building. This work was conducted using a recording device and is played in real-time. A map made to orient the audio track was also created, marking key landmarks (orienting points) in correspondence to the time in which these landmarks were passed. The act of recording revealed the ‘archisculptural’ acoustics of the site; how external energies reflected off the building was of particular interest, therefore, the recording device was always pointed towards the building. Another question asked was “what “activities” from within the building resonated from the outside/how could you discover these without ever entering”, therefore, particular attention was placed on drainpipes, cracks in doors and doors themselves, access points and loading docks.

Einkaufszentren und nach amerikanischem Vorbild errichtete Shopping-Malls prägen zunehmend das Stadtbild. Der Einkaufscenter Boom scheint nicht einzureißen und Einzelhandel-, Gastronomie- und Dienstleistungsbetriebe für den kurz-, mittel- sowie langfristigen Bedarf, finden sich immer häufiger in bewusst geplanten räumlichen Agglomerationen in Form moderner Konsumtempel. “Point of no return” ist eine Vertonung und Verortung der beeindruckenden Belüftungssystem, welche die Zentren mit Frischluft versorgen. Im Falle des Gesundbrunnen Centers wird die Luft tatsächlich im Parkhaus gezogen und von dort nach unten verteilt. Das Audiostück beginnt somit auf dem Parkdeck und folgt mehreren Belüftungssystemen des Gesundbrunnencenters. Einmal über das Parkdeck verteilt, wird sie Teil des Einkaufs Komplexes und der Konsumlandschaft.

Das Center stellt einen Körper bzw ein organisches System dar.
Jeder Körper oder Lebewesen besitzen verschiedenen innere Rhythmen und setzen sich aus diesen zusammen. Ein von Menschenhand kreierter Organismus der seine eigene Rhythmik entwickelt hat. Mein Fokus war auf die Wahrnehmung der Rhythmen, Formen und der geometrischen Anordnung der Elemente gerichtete sowie der Wiederholung.
Menschen verbringen Zeit in diesem Organismus mit zeitlicher Begrenzung und greifen mit Erleben des Raumes und der Objekte in die innere Rhythmik ein (Wechselspiel).
Eine begehbare innere und äußere Raum-Rhythmik entsteht.

Walking through the mall of Gesundbrunnen focusing on what my body could hear instead of see, after the first hour I became increasingly aware of how different it is to walk around in a body with mouth, nose and the skin in between covered with a face mask. My skin felt hot and moist, I’ve developed a microclimate of high humidity where the air is thinner and it’s hard to breathe. So I put my mic under the mask, walking through the mall, and recorded the dampened soundscape.

The recording got lost.

Als ich am Freitag durch das Gesundbrunnencenter lief und mit den Rolltreppen auf und ab fuhr fiel mir auf, dass einige Rolltreppen anders klangen als andere.
Keine Papier- und Plastikschnipsel sowie Steinchen und Dreckpartikel, die in den Rillen der Rolltreppen feststeckten, manipulierten den Klang und den Rhythmus der laufenden Rolltreppe. In meinem kleinen Soundexperiment habe ich insgesamt 22 Rolltreppen im Gesundbrunnencenter aufgenommen und analog zusammen geführt. Den Sound meiner Aufnahmen habe ich ausschließlich analog manipuliert, in dem ich den Klang der Rolltreppen mal von fernerer und mal näherer Distanz aufnahm.
Daraus entstand eine vierminütige Komposition aus ungewöhnlichen aber auch immer wiederkehrenden quietschenden, vibrierenden und summenden Klängen.
